Pissed Jeans are one of those rare incredibly special bands. Their sense of humor, the self deprecation, the subtle intelligence, the complete rocking. It’s all there. This video helps cement them as an all time favorite. The new album is their most complex to date. It’s going to take awhile for me to rank it in their catalog, but I’ll just start by saying it’s incredible.
I saw Babes In Toyland in Minneapolis at Lolla Palooza in 1993. It was awesome. They are from Minneapolis, so it was pretty epic to see a somewhat smaller band get so much love on the big stage.
The most famous of the girl grunge bands. L7 rules. Their next album Bricks Are Heavy was huge and a great excuse to play loud annoying grunge music when girls were around.
Tad was not my favorite, a little to rough for me, but this mellower song of theirs is great.
Time to get a little later in the 90s when slacker music ruled the world. Archers opening for Weezer (original blue album tour) was one of the best shows I’ve seen.
To find new music I used to record MTV’s 120 minutes every Sunday night. On Monday I would go through the show and hope to find new bands I liked. This video came on once and I immediately went to the record store to buy it. Treepeople is one of my all time favorite bands and at the top of my list for bands I wish I had seen live.
Pavement Ist rad. This band was huge. Everyone enjoyed Pavement. As a side note, they are way better live now then they were back in the day.
I wanted to pick a different Superchunk song, but the fact is this song is one of the greatest songs ever made.
Nirvana is of course the quintessential 90s band. And for good reason, they absolutely ruled. My brother paid $35 for the Hormoaning cd and we popped it in on the way up to Minneapolis to go look at new snowboards. We were so blown away by this song that we started moshing in the car. Ha. Oh to be young again.
If you make it through this song please let me know.
Okay, gotta end it with the greatest band of all time. This song was released in the 80s, but still played throughout the 90s. This band basically changed my life and turned me into who I am. They are still my favorite. I love how su
One night after seeing a show filled with under 20 year old hipsters I found myself going to see Sebadoh – a 90s indie rock icon. The crew was Ric, Brian, Maria, John, Zach and I and the place was filled with other aging indie rock nerds. Quasi opened and they were awesome. I enjoyed them more when the singer would play guitar, but they were good when he was on piano too. Well, what’s left of the piano after he kicked it a bunch on the last song.Sebadoh was spectacular. Click the photo above to go to Reverb magazine for more cool photos and big words describing how radical the show was. On top of playing great musically they also proved that they are still socially awkward when interacting with the crowd. Especially Jason. That guy is crazy. I love it! Anyways it looks like they’re basically playing the same setlist every night and I found this one from Seattle’s show:
1 Intro
2 On Fire
3 Dreams
4 Too Pure
5 Soul and Fire
6 Sister
7 Shit Soup
8 Mind Reader
9 Got It
10 I Love To Fight
11 Drag Down
12 Magnets Coil
13 Ocean
14 Skull
15 Rebound
16 License to Confuse
17 Drama Mine
18 Nothing Like You
19 Crystal Gypsy
20 Careful
21 Beauty of the Ride
22 Not a Friend
23 Together or Alone
24 Forced Love
25 Sixteen
26 Give Up
27 Junk Bonds
28 New Worship
29 Brand New Love
30 Worst Thing
31 Not Too Amused
32 Willing to Wait
John gets the nerd award having successfully guessed the first song and was able to name the most tunes after hearing only the first note of the song. Brian and Maria left early. Ric almost puked in my car. Zach used to make fun of me for liking indie rock instead of just punk rock. They were charging $20 for a one color t-shirt and Lou was proud of it. Some dork got called out for the first Dinosaur Jr request of the tour (and no it wasn’t me come on I know they wouldn’t be able to play it good anyways ha). All in all a fun night and they must have played good because I’ve been listening to Sebadoh ever since.Looks like there is lots of youtube clips of the show.
Aaron Betcher’s band O’er The Ramparts played the first Null premiere back in July of 2004. Man that seems like forever ago. Anyways, he’s in another band called Magic Mice and Brian, Jason and I went to check out a show of theirs in Boulder.Should have known Rick would be there, but I didn’t expect those shoes! The first band was a couple ladies singing with a glass of wine and an acoustic guitar. It wasn’t bad, not my cup of tea though. Brian was the only one texting more than me. Magic Mice came on shortly and played a pretty rockin’ set. Brian told me the Westword mentioned Dinosaur Jr as one of their influences or something. That can never be a bad thing and there was definitely some sick guitar solos and distortion. For the most part though they reminded me of good garage rock and I really enjoyed it. Check out their myspace page HERE.An old man laughing at at old man! Ha. The guy in the background was having a ball and dancing it up. You can’t really see from the photo, but he was getting jiggy. Rick approved. The best part was when he stood next to a pregnant lady and stuck out his belly. Golden material there. If I ever get serious about concert reviews maybe I’ll actually start getting within 20 feet of the band when taking photos.Up next was a horrible band named Ego Vs Id. Some Boulder band I guess. How embarrasing. They could play their instruments well enough, but it was cocky jam lets get chicks crap. We left.
