Skate journal: waunakee park without much energy (July 5, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 15th, 2024 by corpo

Feeling sore from several games of basketball the day before I biked to the skatepark.  I had to dry off the ledges.  Did some lines to get going.  Shove, fs ollie on the bank, boardslide.  Ollie to fakie then switch front nose and fakie flip.   Front 50 180 the low ledge.  Front 50 shove.  Couldn’t get halfcab flip after either.  Did a few ollies onto the low pad that were disappointing.  Struggled to get some front 50s on the upper part.  Couldn’t get kickflip 50.   Took a while to get Ollie to fakie on the bank then halfcab noseslide.  Then about 25 tries to do the noseslide 270 shove.  That was mostly it I think.

skate journal: tired sunny valmont and dog park with rob dave and paul (july 2, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 3rd, 2024 by corpo

After a rough night of sleep and a tiring day in the office I arrived to Valmont first. I was debating if I should skate at all and decided to start at the park since it was empty. I quickly became obsessed with a run in the pond that kept getting longer and I would finally get it when Dave and Paul arrived. Rob had been there for a while, but was over at the ledges. The line started as backside grind then kickflip to fakie. I would get that then thought I should do a kickflip to forward on it. And once I got that I decided I should do a noseslide after. All of these weren’t so bad and I did them a few times and it was fun. But a final kickflip to fakie on the super mellow bank after became surprisingly frustrating. It felt cool to get all of those tricks though even if I was dying of thirst. Dave is a wizard at Valmont and doing lots of cool tricks like a halfcab kickturn front truck bash the pole jam. Seriously cool! Rob had joined after a while and we hit the park for a while. Rob was close to kickflip on the bank and had some nice b/s ollies the hip. I saw Paul ollie the hip too and to the rainbow once or twice. I went for front heels on the bank and would get several all while continuing the streak of heel dragging every single one. I couldn’t get treflip after. Dave’s kickflip over the hip was so casual, the no comply tricks so good too.

Then we went over to the dog park where Rob had a good idea of playing a game of SKATE, but the not-so-good idea of having Paul start. Paul would win the game without ever losing his turn. He had done treflip and fakie flip before dumbing things down for us on some 180s. I think the switch front bigspin was the death of Rob and Dave then I would go out on heelflip after even though I would get one the next try. Dave and I played on the little flat bar for a while, getting switch front boards which are so fun on it. I hucked some kick back lips which felt doable until actually trying to commit in which they seemed impossible. Maybe I should be able to do back flips first? Also tried a couple flippers then kickflip front board which was seeming possible until I got too tired. Dave did feeble to boardslide. Then Paul, Dave and I all tried switch flips for a while. Seemed like Paul was the closest this session. I left because I was feeling deliriously hungry.

skate journal: boulder park before work (july 1, 2024)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on July 1st, 2024 by corpo

Woke up super early and went to Boulder park before work because I knew I wouldn’t be able to skate after work. It was cloudy and nice out. I struggled for a bit as one would expect for being so early and having had a few glasses of wine the night before. But ended up having some positives and fun. I had a setup change of course, 8.25 with royals and it was fine. Took a bit to get a noseslide on the bench the kickflip to fakie on the hump. Struggled with kickflips, but b/s flip on flat felt good. Had some easy ollies up onto some of the ledges, but struggled from the bump for some reason. Got to a point where I mostly just skated the bench. Would get boardslide, noseslide, noseslide fakie, crooks, switch front nose, halfcab noseslide, front nose fakie, switch nose, front 50, accidental front 5-0, front 50 180 and front 50 shove. Felt good to get up on that bench without an insane amount of effort. I guess the recent ledge work might finally be paying off (probably jinxed myself). I had also tried some bigflips on the hump, most of which felt unlikely, some front 50s on the hump to ledge, some frontside nollies on the turn around bank up top. It was a pretty fun session, too bad I had to go to work.

skate journal: some avalon flatground then flagston sucking (june 30, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 30th, 2024 by corpo

After chilling most of a Sunday I went out attempting to skate flatground. I went to the Avalon parking lot and started things out. Kind of slow of course. Had gotten a few flippers: kickflip, fakie flip, halfcab flip, f/s halfcab flip, b/s flip, heelflip when I needed to head back to sell some boards to Ryan. After a delay I ended up at the flagstone ledge on campus where I went on to totally suck beyond any comprehension I had imagined. It literally took 10 tries to kickflip. I had somehow done a heelflip before kickflip. I was wearing true orthotitc insoles to reduce knee pain and it just resulted in less board feel I think. A lot less, a whole lot less. Everyone that walked by was so nice and I was so miserable. Couldn’t ollie onto the ledge or 50 it. Made me doubt everything. I would get a couple flippers, but eventually I just stopped and sat in the nice shade for a while before getting a nice text from Liz telling me to pick up some wine. Setup change incoming ..

skate journal: broomfield fun and some weird denver ditch (june 29, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 30th, 2024 by corpo

On a cool day for summer I met up with Rob, Paul and Cass at Broomfield park. I was amazed at how quickly those dudes were ripping. For real though, they were all doing good tricks before I had even popped the tail on my board. Rob manual the blue pad like it was nothing, back 50s. Paul back 50 front 180 out, front 5-0s. Cass back 50s, front noseslides. Those dudes all seemed to go on to have good sessions. I would go on to have a decent session too even though it started slow. I would get several slow front 50s on the black ledge and got one 270 flip flyout after. Most importantly I finally did the front 50 into the bank that I’ve wanted to do since the addtion. It was a serious battle and very depressing at times, but it happened and I was very happy. I went on to do it a handful of times and came close to noseslide 270 shove after. Paul struggled for some front nosegrinds which was rare. Cass did front noseslide shove into the bank. Rob got kickflip out of the bank. It was a fun session.

After a trip to Emage Paul and I ended up at this ditch and would meet Cass and Sean. Sean was much later. Acrtually, so much later that we were already all over it. It was incredibly hard to skate, super rough, super hot and bright. Paul had done some frontside grinds. Cass beat me to kickflip. I had also done a couple front slashes and rock’s. The line was fun, felt like skating a rough waterslide. Sean showed up and quickly noseslide the ledge part which was unreachable to the rest of us.

skate journal: surprisingly fun campus solo session after the rain (june 26, 2024)

Posted in New Shoes, setup change, Skate Journal on June 27th, 2024 by corpo

After a bleak day of work I went home for dinner and chilled a bit as thunderstorms rolled through. It cleared up and I had kind of obsessed with the Folsom Field bank to curb spot so I went there. It was a fun downhill roll there going kind of fast at times being scared of hitting a crack. Made more scarier by a setup change and new shoes. It was very humid out. Well, very humid for Colorado which is probably only like 50% or something. But it almost felt hard to breath at first and I was sweating like crazy. I warmed up with some noseslides to fakie without olleing onto the bank, just a quick little push. And it actually took a few tries to commit to the role off the curb. Geez. This spot has always been way harder for me than it looks. Then I started ollieing on and doing flippers on flat and stuff. Would get several of the 180 stalls that are really fun. My dream is to do a kickflip out. It felt realistic at time, unrealistic at times. I got through quite a few flippers, but was kind of running low on energy. After a while I left and ended up at the little manny pad parking lot where I only manualled and came close to switch 180 manual and nose manual 180. Then nearby I tried to front 50 a waxed part of the banked ledge, but a cop drove by so I left. I hucked a few nollie bs flips that felt close. Then I went to the little tiny downhill curb ledge where I completely struggled to front 50 it, but man I was close to some slow uphill switch flips! Fun session though, I skated hard, it was fun.

skate journal: dog park after work not a lot of energy (june 25, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 27th, 2024 by corpo

After a day of being in the nice AC of the office I walked out after work and it was way nicer out than I had thought. There were clouds and it had cooled down. I pinged Rob and we met at dog park. I had started on my 8.25, went to my 8.5 and actually landed something, then went back to the 8.25. While on the 8.5 I landed a line I had tried the previous time. Switch front nose the metal bench, fakie flip on flat, switch front board the little flat bar (almost a fakie tre after too!). I actually did the line twice, but the second time was way better. After that I don’t remember much of myself other than I hucked some treflips off the grate that felt very doable. I got to the point of committing the back foot, but not the front. Rob had done some manual, nose manual the C pad, back 50s, almost front 50 to front lip, first try kickflip, steezy front noseslides. Paul did a back 50 on the bench on his first line in the park. He definitely isn’t in his 50s. Is he actually even in his 40s? Ha. But he went on to learn slappy back 180 out and then slappy back 360 out which was pretty amazing.

(setups 8.25/8.5 with slappy and didn’t really like either but that might also be because I was stuck wearing the 600s which I do not like compared to the 440s)

skate journal: some light dorking on campus at a new spot (june 23, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 24th, 2024 by corpo

Went to campus after a long day in the heat hiking and chilling with the fam. I didn’t have much drive to skate and I made myself roll for a while and look for new stuff. Turns out near the engineering building there is a spot that had been redone and I had somehow never seen. It had a two stair, six stair, a bunch of knobbed ledges and some tiny bumps in the parking lot. I really struggled initially. Warm up line which took an embarrassingly long time was front 180 a tiny crack gap, switch front 180 the next one, ollie down a 2 stair. Next one was front 180 up the 2 stair, turn around, b/s flip a little bump. I think I got fakie flip and maybe halfcab flip after too. Next line I never got. Front 180 up the two, fakie bigflip the bump. I tried a long time, my knee was hurting. Gave up for treflip but I was beat, it was getting dark and my toe was coming through the shoe. Went to look at the old Folsom bank to curb but it was too dark. So I walked back to the car and called it a night.

skate journal: berthoud park with a really fun crew then some northside (june 22, 2024)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 24th, 2024 by corpo

Cass and I went to Berthoud park to meet Dave. As we pulled up a dude named Alexander hit a stop rock and slammed and let the world know about it. The same thing would happen to me shortly after that although I just kind of laughed. Turns out someone had drove a car through the park, messed up the flat bar, dragged little rocks throughout and destroyed the porta potty. Dave got a broom from the thrift store across the street and Alexander went home and picked one up. After sweeping and some theragun the skating commenced. I once again battled kickflips. Cass did too. We had a margarita bet going when Dave asked to join and did it in a few tries. I’m not sure what it is about that hip, but a regular kickflip over it is hard for me. I would get backside flip in a few tries. Cass kind of hurt his hip and didn’t really get to skate much, hence the one funny f/s halfcab in the clip. Alexander was nice, fun to skate with, could do heelflips, front heels, back heels and actual back flips. Dave was quickly on a terror and did the nollie shove hippie jump early on. Hayden joined us after a while and obviously quickly ripped it. The front nosegrind and back tail happed early on. I had gotten the treflip around then. Actually, I had done another one before that which was even worse. I made Sean laugh later on when I said “I got two treflips and one of them even counts”. Dave’s line to kick back tail was amazing. Sean showed up and did all his moves in like 15 minutes.

After MRKT we ended up at Northside where Cass and I jokingly walked up saying “hold your breath until Noè does a treflip” and it was a whopping 15 seconds. Noè would go on to do like 100 tricks in the midst of incredibly long lines. It’s kind of amazing to witness. I would struggle to get a couple of things. A silly wallie followed by a bs kickflip on the bank. A front slash on the barrier followed by a bigflip on the bank. Couldn’t get no comply flip on a parking block and neither could Hayden. Hayden mostly chilled, Cass chilled, Sean was inspired to do some flippers. I filmed a few clips of Noè then we went to have a celebratory marg since he is 21 now.

skate journal: go skate day at dog park with rob, dave, cass, eric (june 21, 2024)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on June 23rd, 2024 by corpo

After work on “Go Skateboarding Day” met up with Dave, Rob, Eric and Cass at dog park. It was kind of crazy, we had the place to ourselves for the most part. Was hyped to see Eric because it’s been a minute. Saw him lipslide a parking block, flick some heelflips casually like he does, manuals, front tails. Rob had a first t kickflip, manuals, nose manual the c lurb, front 50 it, back 50s the curb, nollie front lips. Dave beat me to switch front board the tiny rail, he also feebled it. He went in on front 50 around the C to kickflip out. A couple were close, that would be sick Dave! Cass had some good back 50s, bs flip on flat, gap to front board off the grate. I had pop with some Slappy trucks on an 8.25, but flip tricks were hard. Although I did get one of the better fakie bigflips I’ve done in a while. I tried a line of switch front nose the metal bench, fakie flip on flat, switch front board the flat bar, but never got them all together. Maybe never got the switch front board at all. Couldn’t get a treflip to save my life and would have been bummed but my front 50s were the best they have been in a while. Got a few on the main bench and ended with a front shove out of one that felt great.
