skate journal: all day skate marathon with a rad crew (april 23, 2016 day 114)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on April 25th, 2016 by corpo

Up early on a Saturday morning that was super nice out. Did some yoga, ate and then left to go skate while others woke up. I went to this bench to try a boardslide ghost ride for the game of OLDFART. At first I thought it would be impossible. Mainly because I couldn’t even ollie high enough to get on the bench initially. Slowly I would boardslide further, then enough to start trying the jump off. It took me about an hour before I got the last one. It was a blast to land it though.

Then I met Rob, Dave, Fuzz and Austin at the new bank spot. It was funny because another old guy showed up randomly. And he was on a Null board! A lot went down, remembering it all is impossible. We skated this for a long time. Rob and I warmed up with the ol’ no comply bigspin. Austin did all wallrides and wallies real quick like. Who invited the young guy? Fuzz had the steeziest halfcab flip in history. Dave got wallie over the hip which he’s wanted to do for awhile. I struggled with kickflip fakie so did bigflip first try. Rob came close to wallie nollies. Dave did his pop shove body varial and wallrid over the pipe. Fuzz called out his primos and landed a wallride or two. A lot more went down, it was a really fun session. Dave and I were the last ones standing and tried switch flips on the bank for awhile. Dave got real close. I was happy to huck it. Rob had to take off.

Today ruled.

Then we went to this random pond spot Dave hadn’t skated in 20 years (literally). We were sketched at first, but it ended up being chill. We totally experienced the initial “how do you skate this?” feeling, but ended up getting some goods. I spent my time trying kickflips over the hip (not another kickflip). Dave and Austin stalled out the tall part of the ledge. Austin had some crazy transfers and a front blunt on the ledge. Fuzz had a sick nose pick along with some epic tail stalls (ie, not epic). Dave rattled off a ton of tricks and ended with a line that had a pivot shove to fakie. So sick! Dave left.

After that it was chill mode. We watched Nolan and Garrett skate this spot. I filmed them get some tricks. It was fun. Then it got cold and we called it a day.

skate journal: fun time at a mostly empty lafayette park with matt (april 11, 2016)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on April 12th, 2016 by corpo

Cool night, but still nice out. I met Matt at a mostly empty Lafayette park. On my first lap through the park this dude was trying a huge flyout and I thought I cut him off from a gnarly transfer. Nope, he just ended up trying flyouts all night and never landed one that I saw. Warming up was ok. Lafayette rules when it’s not crowded. So many lines and weird options that don’t require ollies. Matt had took less tries to treflip up the euro then he did to kickflip up it. We did some roll ins in the bird bath, a few runs in the big bowl, some ledges, etc. It’s hard to document. I will say that I felt some of the best I have in awhile. I was actually trying to do tricks. We hit the big bowl for awhile again later on. I finally managed to carve tile in the deep end. Matt got his first grind in the shallow. That thing is so much work. We were both breathing like crazy. Some flatground went down. I was 1.5/2 on treflips, Matt landed on a nollie big heel. I got a back d on the noping near the entrance of the park which was new for me. I also did some type of rocket ollie flyout that may or may not have been over a cone. It was scary for me. Matt and I played on the tiny coping qp in the middle of the park. Matt got back blunt and I got a few front feebles to fakie and a blunt to back d. The lights shut off right as the only other person left at the park did a textbook nollie over the cone.

skate journal: redder curbs fun! (feb 18, 2016 day 49)

redder curbs

yellow curbs

the colors of curbs

Went to Blue Skies for an early lunch break, but it was so windy I left after one kickflip. Later in the evening I went to Redder Curbs as it had rained and was very windy at times. Somehow that place is protected from a lot of wind. I started with some slappies on the yellow block. Both ways. Crooks too. So fun. Then added in some slappy crooks on the kinked curb, back 50, front 50s. I had a few 360 flips. Even if I didn’t ride away I would land on almost all of them. Guess you just have to work on them to learn them. Who would have thought. I was having fun trying lines and finally feeling decent on my board. It took awhile, but I back 50d the median over the two parking blocks. That felt really cool. Also got front 5-0 there. Came close to back tail on the kinked curb, but the wind would come in fierce right there so it made it tough. After awhile I just tried switch crooks on the top part of the kinked curb. Over and over. Trying nollie flips between each one. Got close to nollie flip. I tried switch crooks forever. I had a couple that grinded, a bunch that went into boardslide and I slammed and one lousy one where I didn’t really grind to end it. I was still happy about it though. Fun night. So happy to finally not feel so arthritic and sore.

skate journal: blue snows with dave in warm 40 degree weather. then SWITCH FLIPS!!! (jan 13, 2016 day 13)

Lunch time at Blue Snows with Dave and extra obstacles ❄️. Can't believe how warm 40 feels! @fullertrron #day13

Feeling more sore then normal I went to Blue Skies to meet Dave. It felt cool when we first started skating, but a few minutes in it felt quite nice. Warm ups were a pain especially with most of the bank covered. We got at it though. Dave brought the heat and it got me hyped. The ollie/180 quick feet is way harder then it looks. The ollie into the bank is sick. He also had fast front 50s on the ledge and made it up onto the next level (didn’t fit in 15second clip). Kickflips, almost feebles on the flat bar, noseslides. He was ripping. We both did the kickflip to fakie in the narrow with the snow. I got fakie flip at the end too. I was trying a line of ollie the first flat bar then heelflip on flat (never got it) or hippy jump (only got it once) and then a slow front tail on the ledge as a baby step toward not getting a letter. My flip trick game was ok. I got a bad treflip or two, came close to nollie inward heel, nowhere close to rick flip or fakie varial heel. At the very end we did these little front truck wallrides only holding on to the tallest ledge. It was rad. New trick! Gotta keep at that one. These sessions go by way too quick.

In trying to maintain “30 minutes of flatground a day” I went out to the garage on a decently warm night. It’s just so convenient to not have to drive and all that. I was so incredibly sore. I thought it was a stupid idea, but I tried anyway. Kickflips came. Treflips didn’t. Then I tried switch kickflips for like 30 minutes straight. I wasn’t close at all initially, but after a few tries I was committing. However the board normally only flipped half way. I kept at it, got insanely close to one. THEN LANDED ONE! That is my second switch flip ever and my first in over 10 years. I would go on to kind of land another one, but it had landed primo for a second then fell into the make. Ha. Either way I was hyped. When I landed the switch flip I ran into the house and gave Ollie a bunch of high fives as he was trying to get his homework done. I went on to also land a frontside flip, heelflip and eventually a nollie varial flip. Maybe the first time ever that I’ve landed at least one nollie, switch, heel and regular flip trick. Hyped! The flip tricking seemed to make the pain go away. It makes no sense to me, but it’s normally the case that this happens. Maybe all the movement breaks up my arthritis. I don’t know. But I’m glad it didn’t make me even more sore.

skate journal: launch fun with dave and john (jan 12, 2016 day 12)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on January 13th, 2016 by corpo

dave fuller at launch fort collins miniramp

After work I picked up Dave and we rolled to Fort Colllins. We stopped at MRKT so I could sell boards. We ate and went to Launch around 6. Luckily there was only a few people there. We started on the main ramp. I like it, it’s fun to carve around on. But man, I have not been skating ramp lately and it showed. I was bailing axle stalls and kickturns. Dave said he was struggling too, but his tricks are way beyond my pay grade. John joined after awhile and you can tell he skates there a lot. He was ripping! Fakie ollies above coping, front slash 360, fakie front smith fakie, backside ollies, blunt to back d, so many tricks. There were a couple other kids skating and ripping. They were fun to skate with. One young kid that needed a lot of attention, but other then that the scene was rad. I would get a few of my basic tricks. Front d, fakie back smith to fakie, front rock, front smith jib, that’s about it. Dave had some lofty f/s ollies, fakie ollies, the chillest rock fakies around, lots of tricks I don’t know the name of, front smiths, a bunch more I’m forgetting.

The younger dudes had setup a ledge off the smaller ramp and it looked fun. So we waited for some of them to leave then skate it. It was so fun. At first it was flat off the ramp. Crooksing it was oh so fun. Dave had front 50 back 180 off all good, back 50s, almost back and front nosegrinds, crooks. John had front 50, almost back 180 out, switch front nose, front shove off the ramp. I had a back 50 or two, a bad slam on a back 50, front 50, almost front 50 shove, then tried a million crooks to bigspin out. Landed on it, kind of landed one with a lot of the spin being on the ground. Was still hyped though and it was really fun to try. John left. Then we put the ledge off the ramp so it was slightly downhill. I was hyped to crooks down it as I haven’t really crook’d down much of anything. I struggled with front 50, but got a couple, one with front 180 out. Dave back 50’d it easy and crook’d it too. Crooking downhill is fun! I hope some day to do it at Lafayette park.

Had a lovely case of food poisoning or something overnight. It’s not exactly food poisoning, it’s like a combination of spicy food and a couple drinks that seems to cause it. Anyway, it sucks. I was up most of the night shivering violently so I had slept in real late and taken a nap before I even considered going skating. So late in the afternoon Dave got me to this Valmont garage for what turned into a surprisingly awesome session. A lot went down. We both skated pretty well and we didn’t start documenting clips until near the end. On the yellow parking block I had slappy crooks and regular slappy. Dave had front blunt, slappy crooks, slappy feeble, back 5-0 and of course the switch slappy crooks above. Flatground went really well for me. I had kickflip, fakie flip, heelflip, treflip, halfcab flip, fakie bigflip, b/s flip, f/s flip, nollie treflip and kinda close to fakie hardflip. The kinked red curb was fun. Dave had an amazing long back 50 through the rough part. I did a bunch of slappy crooks because it was so fun. I got a few back 50s and close to a back 50 shove. Dave also had some noseslides through the kink and some front tails. I was trying front tails on the median red curb. Got a couple ok ones, baby steps towards the front tail shove. I had a few switch noseslides on the downhill part of the red curb, some with shove out. We ended by trying to do the long 50s (backside for him, frontside for me) on the kinked curb. It was fun. Dave had a few good ones, I had one long one. Really fun session.

Finally, a “warm” day in the 40s! After a long walk with Liz I set out to Wells Fargo bank to do a quick River Dance. It ended up being way harder there then I thought because it was too quick. On top of that some trucks were going to pull in and some workers informed me that my car would be stuck if I didn’t move it. I left.

You know it's January when 45 feels this warm. @fullertrron 5-0

After chilling at Sol for awhile Dave and I went to Rocky Mtn Elem and it was mostly dry! They had even redone a lot, but somehow left the ledge and banks completely skateable. Awesome. We started off on flatground. I had a new deck and put smaller trucks back on. It felt very different, but nice. I still wasn’t skating great. I had long johns on to combat the soreness I got in the cold the day before. It was overkill, but kind of nice. We did some nollies, switch ollies, 180s, etc over a little puddle. It was fun. We had some kickflips too, I struggled with halfcab flips, but landed on a nollie tre first try. Basically the board was flipping better again, but I just wasn’t used to it yet. Then we moved on to the ledge. In the school remodel they had created a rather large crack before the frontside approach that really messed with me. Gotta bondo it! Anywahs, we still rattled off quite a few tricks. Dave did boardslide to fakie real quick, crooks, noseslide, back 50, boardslide 270, front 50, front 5-0. He did all of them good too. I had noseslide, noseslide to fakie, crooks, some bad back 50s, front 50, front 5-0 (accident), front 50 shove. I tried kickflip noseslide for awhile and committed a couple times, I had one flop off and I landed it, but still none where I really got into a noseslide. I got close to kick back 50 too, it’s great how fast the smaller setup flips. We did some lines. Ollieing the medians on the banks. There are rocks you can ollie on to now. I think Dave did a line of front 5-0, manual on a rock, nollie back 180. Tight.

Then we went to this little park. There wasn’t much to skate as it was mostly snowy. We skated the bank for awhile. Dave did nosebash to fakie and nosebash tail grab to fakie. They looked fun so I tried them too and eventually landed them. So fun! Then I did my first ever crailbock! I’m coming for you Rob! Ha ha, it hyped me up though. Dave went gnar and nollied then fakie ollied into the bank. I took awhile to do a kickflip to fakie on the bank. Dave rattled off a bunch of different tailblock tricks. My favorite being the rocket block. It made me laugh. We ended with the boardslides and 50s on the snowy ledge. It was fun.

Fun times in the frigid weather with @joerhamilton and @mattrief

A video posted by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

On a cold and windy midwest day I drove to Fremont, NE to meet up with Matt and Joe. Joe was still working and after Matt and I hung out for a bit we went to this slappy curb spot. Wow, it’s an amazing curb. It’s got a slight angle like a Cali curb. It was PERFECT for slappy tricks. It was so perfect in fact that it took me awhile to land a slappy crooks. I figured it out though and tried to crook the whole section. I never got to close do doing the whole 20′ section, but man it was fun. Matt was ripping with tricks like the nollie shove back 50, front 50 nollie bigspin out, slappy back 50 the whole section, manuals, nose manuals, first try nollie flip off the curb, backside nosegrind the yellow end part of the curb. We both did kickflips off. I never got regular slappies frontside or backside. The front feeble didn’t take too long though and felt super rad. I messed around with some other basic tricks and had fun. It was hard to not just do slappy crooks over and over though as it was so incredibly fun. In the end I had an over 40 make on a new trick. Fakie front 50 b/s halfcab out. It was sketchy, but felt cool. Joe finally got off work and skated with us for about 15 minutes. He did a bunch of tricks first try. Slappy, front 50, front 50 shove, slappy back 50 to boardslide pop to fakie, fakie 50 to boardslide pop out to fakie. So rad to skate with these fellas. I wish I could skate with them all the time.

skate journal: fun times at the new bank spot in longmont (dec 5, 2015 day 325)

the new new bank spot

Met Dave, Rob, Bernie and Garrett at this spot shortly after lunch on a nice winter day. I hadn’t been to this spot since they redid it. It is amazing. The warm up process is easier when pumping a bank is involved. Warmups were no comply bigspin for Rob and I. B/s flip for Bernie and I. Hardflip fakie for Bernie. Wallies on the corner for Garrett. Filming for Dave. Ha. I started messing around with a bean plant wallride/bash to fakie. I have no idea why, it just seemed like a cool trick to do there. I would get one kind of quickly with a hand push off then took like 30 more tries to land another one. Garrett did wallie front 180 over the hip so sick. Bernie was doing f/s flips and trying this crazy rock ‘n roll on the corner of the wall. It was bonkers. He got close quite a few times. Rob had smooth wallrides, b/s one foot ollies, close to b/s no comply finger flip. Dave started skating after I finally landed the beanplant trick and quickly rattled off a bunch of tricks. Fakie wallride, switch no comply, switch no comply 360, invert wallride. Bernie won a fakie treflip race. I slammed pretty hard trying to push switch through a crack before the bank. Everyone left except Dave and I. We just kept messing around having fun. We skated the hip for awhile. Dave did 360s, boneless, almost cab big spin. I did a weak sauce b/s flip, boneless, a fakie bigfip where I landed going the same way I came from. The ‘hip’ is round and there is no defined spots to take off from so it’s just kind of weird. After awhile this lady with a baby and a dog showed up to the playground that is right there. The dog was running after us behind the fence barking and barking and barking. It was quite annoying. I did a fun varial flip to fakie. Then we ended as I tried 360 flip to fakie for a long time and Dave tried varial flip to fakie. I managed to get an ‘over 40’ make of the treflip which was a pretty rad ender for a super fun session.

sweet bank to curb skatepark

Went out to the garage with my new setup without much intent on skating hard or long. I started on the “manual pad” and a few tricks in I slammed, did the splits and hit the back of my head on a bike pedal. Awesome. I did a few more manuals tricks then decided to bring in Ledgy and see if it would be possible to skate it in my garage. I went to move the ‘manual pad’ and noticed how convenient it would work to make a sweet bank to curb. I played with that for awhile, but it needs a sign at the bottom to make it good. The sign I have was in the back yard and covered with snow. Next time. I still messed around for awhile, just lifting up the crack and doing nose stalls and front rocks and stuff. I think it will be quite fun.

so much room

Then I put Ledgy out to skate. I only did stalls obviously since there is no room. I’m not sure I could actually do grind tricks, but I did backside nose stall shove and frontside nosestall shove. Both were really fun. Don’t think I’ve ever done the fs version before. Then I made myself do a front tail stall and called it a night. Oh yeah, I hucked a few switch flips without getting close. The new setup is a 8.38 board. Why am I going bigger? Because I’ve been into ledges and I think the extra board room helps me.
