skate journal: actually able to ollie at research ledge (sept 12, 2018)

So I was super annoyed with the Es Swifts the night before. I wanted to try vulcs again. I pulled some lightly worn 255s out of the closet and put some Footprint 5mm insoles in them. I drove all over town trying to find something to skate. Valmont was dark, new ledge area is close to the police station, blah blah, I ended up back at research ledge. I set the board down and immediately felt better about my feet situation. I went to the front and rode down the long stairs as a warm up. Then down to the ledge. Much to my delight the student bus wasn’t parked there and would never come. Hopefully they stopped running it! I felt a little weird because of the different shoes, but for the most part felt great. I had some funny slams up the curb, but other then that I skated great. I was trying. I got into a back 50 right away, but didn’t land it. I would never get a proper 50. I was having fun forcing myself to ollie up the curb at a spot that was a little further than normal. The highlight was how easily I was getting onto the ledge frontside. I got into like 5 front 50s in a row. I only landed a couple, but the chunky ledge is partially to blame for that. I was even going a little faster than normal too. It was encouraging to say the least. I ended trying front 180 up the curb then halfcab noseslide the ledge. I got a very bad halfcab noseslide that took a long time. I ended with a couple fun crooks. I felt great in vulcs. My toes hurt less. My heel didn’t hurt. My knees were sore after though so we’ll see how long I could keep this up.

(setup 8.25 null perception deck, venture 5.25 awake lows, stock white bushings, 3 washers inside each axle, 51mm v1 bones stf wheels, new balance numeric 255 cream/gum size 12, footprint flat 5mm insoles)
(pain level 3/10 general knee and toe pain)

On another beautiful evening I met up with Kevin, Darin, Sean at Broomfield park. Mike had joined and Justin was there. Mike and Kevin were totally ripping when I got there. Sean was doing the ol’ dynamic stretching warm up. Darin was on the QP / manny pad section. My ingrown toenail had gotten really bad, I tried to skate through it, but after awhile it was kind of impossible. I mostly started with Kevin and Mike on the black ledge area. Kevin was shredding lines and skating fast. Back 5-0s, nosegrinds, nollie nosegrind, nollie b/s flip out of the bank, etc. Mike shreds. Back tail, nollie back tail fakie, bigflip. I did okay going backside, finally got the easy switch 180 into the bank easily. Had a fun crooks. But when it came to go frontside I couldn’t 50 the black ledge to save my life. So I went over to the quartapotty and lined stuff out with Darin. I was going for fakie flip, fakie pivot fakie, fakie 50. What I got was a fakie smith fakie and a fakie 50. I had a few fakie 50 attempts where I straight up missed. It was annoying. My shows were driving me nuts. Sean and Justin were flying around the park. Sean was rattling off tricks on the black ledge. Him and Kevin were flying out over the cone too. Saw Kevin switch flip it and Sean fakie flip it. Before you freak out let it be known it was on it’s side. Ha. Darin had a line of back tail the qp then back tail to fakie the blue ledge. I had given up on skating by then as my toe hurt too much. So I filmed for awhile. I need to let the camera run longer after Kevin bails because he does funny stuff. Darin went for bluntslide too, but couldn’t get it. Maybe after he upgrades to 4.5. Kevin gave up on switch flip manny after almost doing it first try. We watched Sean get a new trick, halfcab nose manual 180 the hard way. I did a couple slappy front “crooks” that Kevin filmed and it totally inspired him to try one more switch flip manual and land it. So sick!
