skate journal: painful broomfield park with rob and fuzz (july 27, 2017)

fuzz

Went to Broomfield park on a nice night. Rob was there first. Then a bunch of scooter kids and bikers. My knees were incredibly sore. I was trying PJ shoes with FP insoles to see if they would help. Nope. Rob was shredding already. Kickflips, nose manuals, back 50s, front boards, switch boardslides. Fuzz showed. Stoked. Fuzz coined Rob as “Robs Of Fire”. Now that’s a complement. After some warming up we all got first try kickflips. Fuzz struggled manualling the blue box, but no problems on the black box. He had some quick feet 180s up and halfcab off the blue box. We all mostly skated the blue box, quartapotty, black box, flat. There was a dude there doing some amazing flip tricks. Rick flips, fakie bs back heel, inward heel, nollie inward, really popped heelflips and he did heelflip and hardflip mannys first try. So sick. I struggled, but there were a few things that cheered me up. First try halfcab noseslide on the black box, crooks black box, and some noseslides on the brown ledge where I was actually posted up on it. I think we all got halfcab flips. Fuzz got heelflip, fakie 50 blue box, back 50 death defy the black box. After awhile Fuzz and Rob started trying ollie over the parking block to manual to shove out. Neither would get it. It was cool seeing Fuzz try so hard though. He was so close, but never quite got it. I love skating with those dudes even when I’m in pain and can hardly skate.

skate journal: brief meet up curb then redder curbs with dave (july 26, 2017)

The rain was threatening. I had chilled with Liz for awhile then went to meet Dave (and hopefully Carleigh but she ended up not making it) at the meet up curb on campus. I was way more sore than I expected. Each ollie hurt, so I tried to avoid them for awhile. But you can only do so many slappy crooks. Oh yeah, I had some new wheels. 51mm Spit 101a F4. They felt big. Add in a 1/8″ riser and some different old NB shoes and that added to the struggle. I was like 0-5 on kickflips and kind of rolled my ankle on one. Dave was doing back 50s, ride on front tails, slappy noseslides and stuff. I was trying back 180 off the little kicker then switch front crook on the curb. It never worked, it was hard to land and be setup for the curb. Then it started pouring.

So we went to Redder Curbs and had to warm up all over again. We did a few runs around the garage before sticking with no comply flips. Dave got his first. Can’t believe how close we got to back to back. That would have been so awesome. I really struggled with kickflips. My legs were hurting so bad. I think this is it for vulcs again. I would eventually kickflip over the parking block, but it was not easy and I was squatting for like 20 feet after since my legs could barely handle it. Ugh. Dave got a switch no comply over the parking block. He had some good back 50s on the kinked curb, slappy crooks, slappy feebles. I had a couple slow front 50s. Almost gave up on skating, but decided to stretch. It helped, but not much. Then we hucked 360 flips off a little kicker for awhile. Dave got insanely close once. I hurt too much so I sat and watched Dave.

skate journal: omaha park with dan, joe and matt on a warm evening (july 24, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 27th, 2017 by corpo

After a long hot day at the zoo without eating (no GF DF options) I met Joe, Dan and Eric at the Omaha part on a hot evening. I was late so they were already warmed up. I had originally thought I wouldn’t be able to skate at all, but my foot started feeling better. Unlike the previous day I would struggle with crooks. Lame! Dan had to leave, but not before he did a front 50 to manual to boardslide. So good. Matt and Joe were rifling off their ledge tricks. Both are so good. I took a long time to land anything, but had a brief period of okness. Did a slow halfcab noseslide then a kickflip on the bottom of the qp. Also a switch front noseslide then a switch noseslide shove out. Joe did front 5-0 to front board. Matt lipslid the rail. Joe got a line of front 50 shove the tall ledge then fakie flip the bank. Matt got nollie back heel on the bank. I did a kickflip on it but couldn’t get the noseslide 270 shove. A couple tries were close. What a perfect ledge for it.

We played a game of skate. Joe and matt got me with non-flip tricks. Those lame-ohs. Ha ha. It was fun, but matt did nollie 3 shoves both ways. I tried 360 flips after that and couldn’t quite get them. Matt got a perfect switch tre though! Amazing. Fun session. Those dudes rule.

skate journal: omaha park on a hot sunday morning (july 23, 2017)

omaha nebraska skatepark

I arrived on a hot morning to a heated old guy session. There was about 10 dudes these ripping. Now when I say old I only mean 30 something. If that. But for Omaha it’s old. Most of the skaters I see there are really young. So I was a little intimidated and mostly messed around for awhile. Got a bs flip on the bank, some bean plants, etc. On the ledge I was 100% on crooks. Felt rad! Did a lot of switch noseslides. Eventually the crowd thinned out and I felt a little looser. Ollied onto the taller ledge, got some slow front 50s on the regular ledge, almost no comply flip the parking block. My back foot PF really started hurting. Ugh. I got an ollie onto the taller ledge and 180’d off. I left a big sweaty mess.

skate journal: downtown denver with joe, damon, fuzz and dave (july 20, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 27th, 2017 by corpo

Joe, Damon and I went to Crisis then after some chilling we ended up at Safeway ledge. Warming up was whatever then Joe called out a game of SKATE on the ledge. It ended up being pretty fun. I was bummed on bailing back 50s, but first try front 50 shove, halfcab noseslide, fakie 50 felt good. Joe did a fakie smith to forward. Damon and I got some funny versions where we landed in grind and fell off. But they counted! Joe won the game on a nollie front 50. Then we messed around for awhile. Joe got a front smith. Damon fakie flip front tail. I got switch noseslide 270 out.

Fuzz showed and we were off to denver. Apparently it had rained some and civic was wet. We ended up at the metal grate spot and we skated it like the dorks we are. Well, some of us. Damon was doing fakie ollies in and out. Fuzz, Joe and I were doing ollies in, stalls on the inside curbs, and coming out randomly. It was fun once I was warmed up enough to ollie the little curb. Yeah, it took awhile. Ugh. I ended up doing ollie in, wallie nollie then no comply grab out. The wallie nollie felt great. Joe and Fuzz did a million tricks. Pivots, smith, shove, etc. Fuzz had the hot boneless wallride. Dave had shown. He was doing more ollies on nearby ledges, but the fakie wallride was sick. Joe had is ollie out and my knee didn’t like that. It would spell the end of my night.

Well, after some slappys on a nearby curb/ledge. Damon went off. Front 50, 180 out, shove out. Joe 50d it. Dave slappy crook and almost boardslide to fakie. Fuzz switch noseslide.

We eventually got the boot and ended at this bank to curb with some homeless people. It was a little surreal, but awesome. Joe and Damon skated. The rest of us hung out while they drank and smoked crack. It was crazy. One dude knew a lot about skating.

We hit the Wells Fargo slappy curbs for a bit, well, everyone but fuzz and I. We talked about how we’ve started to understand how people stop skateboarding. We aren’t there yet, but it hurts so much and is getting so much harder. Which is kind of funny because Dave is older and he kept on ripping. Slappy feeble! The last spot was a fun watch. Damon and dave hit the 3 stair to quick drop. Daves ollie then back 180 was amazing.

skate journal: campus fun and struggles with dave and rob (july 19, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 20th, 2017 by corpo

It was 97 during the day. When I got off work rain was threatening and the temperature was nice. I went to dog park, but didn’t feel like only flat. Then I went to research. Wasn’t really into that either and it had started sprinkling. Finally got a hold of Dave and we decided to meet at the Engineering building. In the 3 minute drive there the rain had cleared up. But we decided to skate there for awhile anyway as it was a good meet up spot for Rob. I started slow, stayed slow, but had fun. I love the variety of this spot. Took a bit, but had a warm up run of nose”slide” to fakie, switch 180 into the second “bank”, kickflip on flat, then back 180 up the little wedge curb. Dave showed. We did stationary kickflips. It was funny. Just a couple 40 somethings doing stationary kickflips. We kind of settled in on lines. I was trying slappy crooks then b/s flip into the second “bank”. Got really close. Dave was trying noseslides, then going uphill for crooks to fakie, then back down for slappy crook on the tall ledge. He came close. It was sick. Rob had shown and left right away telling us to meet him at the slappy ledge when we’re ready. I did a back 50 on the 3 stair then slammed the next 3 and we went to meet up with Rob. The weather was warm, but not raining. Pretty much perfect.

We left to try and find this new waxed curb, but got distracted by some big sets of stairs. Ha. Oh yeah, my hardware was loose on both trucks, my pivot cup and kingpin were loose on my front truck. Every crack I hit caused my trucks to squirl out. It was annoying, I tried not to let it effect me, but since I struggled to ollie up 2 stairs I’m going to use it as an excuse. Anyways. Dave got things going pretty quick with a sick narrow manual next to the handicap rail, ollied the 4, ollied the 3 then front 180’d into the wood construction ramp. So rad. I seriously could not get up the 2. It was so annoying. I would eventually do it, failed at the 4 stair after. Then did ollie up and back 180 off. It was really fun. Rob did no comply up the 2 then beanplant off. Then a stubborns hammer line of back 180 up and no comply shove off. Bolts. We looked for the curb after, but I had to go so I left those dudes. Skating downhill back I was nervous my front hanger would fall off. Luckily it never did. Then I had a fun night hanging with the neighbors.

skate journal: fun at saul’s then some real brief pain (july 17, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 18th, 2017 by corpo

Went to Saul’s after a quick meal. Will and Saul were already there. Nick would show up later. It was a really fun session. My bailed axle stall count was pretty low for me. I had a lot of carve grinds, some regular grinds, got into front smiths and often ran out of speed. Ha. I did get multiple walls in a row of grinds/stalls though. Saul had some good backside grinds then started trying “anything but another backside grind”. Ha. He had a couple really good front slashes, looked close to front smith. Will was ripping as usual. Switch frontside carve grind. Wow. It was funny though, because he struggled with a regular rock ‘n roll. When he got it, he did it great, but it’s just funny seeing someone that good have trouble with a rock ‘n roll. Skateboarding rules like that. Nick had the rocks, toyed with boardslides in the deep. I had to bail to get boards to Meta. After Meta I stopped by the rainbow ledge not feeling great. I tried a few tricks and bailed a front 50 and so much pain shot through my left heel that I quit and went home. Argh. Then Ollie and I went to Boulder creek and got cold. It was nice.

skate journal: bank to curb/stairs in longmont with stubborns (july 15, 2017)

Late start for the Stubborns. We met around 1pm at this spot in Longmont. Jake, Dave and I showed first. Then Jack and Carleigh and then Fuzz and Kevin. Early on I thought I was going to have a great day. I was feeling good. Started off with some fun noseslides to fakie, boardslides, switch noseslides and my flip tricks were feeling good. It didn’t really get past that though other than I landed on a couple of treflips making for several days in a row which felt neat. Jake struggled too. This spot is infinitely harder than it looks. Ride through a big crack and then pop immediately. Dave will say he struggled, but man he put down so many tricks. boardslide 270 on the curb. On the stairs front 50, back 50, front 50, front 50 back 180, front 50 to front board pop out, boneless over it, front nosegrind. Good stuff. Jack didn’t land every trick so it was a good indication it was a hard spot. He would get front noseblunt, front noseblunt to front lipslide pop out (wow!), b/s flip over the stairs, and a bunch of other “basics” I couldn’t get close to doing. Kevin kills ledges. He did a lot too. Front/back 5-0s, tails, almost kick back tail and switch nosegrind. Fuzz got front 50 pretty quick then struggled with some other moves. He did get a noseslide though which was way sick. Carleigh and I struggled with back 50s the whole time. Except she actually figured it out and landed a bunch of them all steezy and even went on to then manual down the bank. So good. We went to another spot where Kevin, Jack and Dave skated. The rest of us shot photos or filmed. It was cool. Jack and Dave got some bangers.

I had a fun day with the crew. Having Hosercam be the filmer is awesome. My setup didn’t bother me at all, but man, my feet had started hurting. Ugh. Plantar Fasciitis sucks.

skate journal: flatground friday with dave (july 14, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 16th, 2017 by corpo

Met Dave at the Dog Park after work. He was already ripping when I got there. Shoves, kickflips, fakie bigs, etc. I felt better than yesterday and the warm up process wasn’t too bad. We tried a couple of three trick lines for awhile. The first was nollie back 180, fakie shove then switch front shove. We both started pretty bad bailing multiple fakie shoves. Dave came through first and got a good switch front shove. I eventually got it, but the switch front shove was terrible. I would like to work on that trick. Next three trick line was kickflip, nollie front big then fakie flip. Dave picked a bad time to struggle with kickflips. I came close, but kept messing up the fakie flip. My nollie bigs were basically just nollie shoves with a very late 180. I eventually started beginning of the line with heelflips and Dave did too. I got a few. Then we played with 360 flips for awhile and other tricks. I got a really sketchy hand down 3 flip and then a less sketchy hand down version. Dave was pretty close for awhile. Then he started doing backside bigspins. He struggled a bit, but ended up getting some good ones. Dave had to leave. I tried nollie flips for awhile which felt doable, but I ended up feeling tired and wanting to head home. I had changed insoles a couple of times. I started with the spenco/fp 5mm, but that is so thick. Then some Remind which felt really good, but maybe a little too small. Then Spenco/thin Adidas. It doesn’t seem like any of them are perfect. All help my knees, but I don’t think I will ever get rid of my Plantar Fasciitis. Argh.

(setup 8.25″ null rabethica deck, venture 5.2 AWAKE lows, venom 90a bushings, 1/16″ riser, old spitfire 101a 50mm F4 wheels, 3 washers on the inside of each axle, nbnumeric 254 cream/gum size 12 with various insoles)

skate journal: flatground with dave that went decent then saul’s (july 13, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 14th, 2017 by corpo

Was super tired at work all day, but decided to skate after work regardless. I got to Dog Park first and took quite awhile to get the legs going. Dave showed when I had gotten to kickflip, no comply 180 and then fakie flip. Dave started the warm up process too. He chose to do like 20 fakie shove it’s in a row. It looked pretty funny. I started skating decent for me, actually landing a couple tricks in a row sometimes. Halfcab flip, fakie bigflip, heelflip even got a treflip (one hand down) within a few tries. I still didn’t have much confidence and skated incredibly slow, but it felt like progress. Oh yeah, they painted parted of it for some reason. It’s a littler slicker which is nice, but reflects more sun making it brighter. Dave had a lot of kickflips, shoves, fakie bigs, kind of cab big and finished off with varial flip and fakie varial flip. He also did a ton of backside bigspins. So sick. I took a long time to get a fakie varial flip, couldn’t get nollie var flip, but was close. It was hot out, I was sweating like crazy.

Then we went to Saul’s for a shortish session. I didn’t skate too well, perhaps the tiny wheels and low trucks are actually a disadvantage. I did manage my little grind the shallow corner than front rock line. Although each time it seems like my front rock gets worse. Also got a front disaster, got into front axle stall but didn’t try to land it, rolled in first try again, got a front axle on the noping qp then ride on grind/transfer into the bowl. It was fun. Saul had some good 50s, the carve grind magic as always, close to the cali grind transfer, laughed at Dave and I for skating flat, almost slappy’d the parking block we moved, rolled in casual on the easy part. Dave is sizing up an even longer boardslide. At least it looks like it wont be super easy for him. He killed it in the casual way he usually does. The Texas Plant to slam looked pretty painful though. Fun day and it as tough as it was starting out right after work it was nice having the rest of the evening to chill.

(setup 8.25″ null rabethica deck, venture 5.2 AWAKE lows, venom 90a bushings, 1/16″ riser, old spitfire 101a 50mm F4 wheels, 3 washers on the inside of each axle, nbnumeric 254 cream/gum size 12 with spenco 3/4 thinsoles and Footprint 5mm kingfoam insoles)
