skate journal: marathon night at research ledge with dave (june 22, 2015 day 168)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 23rd, 2015 by corpo

After driving down from BV and some eating and resting I headed to research ledge on a beautiful evening. The first thing I did was walk up the hill and just do fakie ollies down it. So fun. Then a couple runs with different 180s. Then noseslides, crooks and horrible back 50 on the ledge. Started with some basic lines like front shove, ollie up the curb, crooks. Then the other way front 180 or switch front 180 the manhole and front board popout or switch noseslide on the ledge. Tried crooks bigspin out for awhile. Never got too close. On the way back I would try tricks like switch heel, varial heel, fakie tre. I eventually went up the hill and tried some long runs starting at the little hip thing. Got a few flippers over it, kickflip, b/s flip, varial flip, halfcab flip and fakie bigflip. No long lines though. I would try treflips on the sidewalk when I went back to the starting point and landed quite a few. Dave showed up. Then we just skated the hill for awhile and it was awesome. We didn’t have many long runs, but we did put down a lot of tricks. First and foremost Dave landed his first couple fakie flips in forever, or maybe ever. So awesome. He did a lot of nollie shoves, shoves, 180s in all directions, 360s in most directions, lots of kickflips, no comply shove, etc. I got a line of fakie flip, halfcab flip, 360 flip. Hyped. Other tricks were heelflip, fakie bigflip. Got close to varial heel on the way up and posed more switch flips. Then I kickflipped all the way down the hill. I think I did 10 in a row with only one little speed check. It was a blast! But man it really wore me out.

Then we went to the back area. I was too tired to ollie, but we did a bunch of cali grinds. I just did back 50 and back 5-0. Dave did front 50, front 5-0, front 5-0 to fakie, switch back 50 and a front 5-0 to front tail to fakie where he rode off the bottom stair. So sick. Then we went back to the ledge. I thought we would be leaving. But nope, it’s Dave so we kept on skating. He did this front board transfer up onto the ledge to fakie then turned it into front lip to front tail. Rad. So I spent the next hour trying to do a regular footed version of that which I finally did. Boardslide transfer up to fakie, turn it to switch front board then pop out to fakie. Pretty fun. I then did boardslide transfer up to fakie and a switch front 180 off the ledge. Dave did an amazing front crooks! Seriously, perfect! He did some regular crooks too. I ended with a good feeling crooks. Really fun night.

skate journal: fathers day skate with ollie at leadville park (june 21, 2015 day 167)

Put the wider hangers back on my setup on the way up to Leadville. Ollie and I arrived to a mostly empty park with the exception of a group of BMXers. They were mostly in the bowl except this one lady who was just doing laps in the street section not doing a single trick, just pumping, carving, over and over and over. My initial response was that I remembered not liking this park very much. But luckily I ended up having a blast. This was mostly because I saw the tiny quarter pipe and thought it would be a good place for the switch bean plant to tail challenge. It took me like 20 minutes to work up to a switch dropin though. So scary. Once I did that I managed a few switch bean plants to tail and I was super hyped. Then I asked Ollie to film it and it ended up taking me another 10 minutes or so. Oh well, so stoked to land that and get it out of the way. Not sure I have any desire to try that one again, but it was fun. Ollie cruised around pushing mongo. He’s got a pretty creative eye and it’s cool what he chooses to try. The f/s halfcab was every try for him. He also had some cool ride on grinds and stuff. At one point I was trying to manual up the A-ledge thing and I bailed out and my board shot right into my sack. It hurt so bad I thought I was going to puke. Luckily the pain subsided and I was able to keep skating. I had that fun line above. Unfortunately Rob and I had some texting issues and he showed up right as we were leaving. Doh. Fun session though. Oh yeah, I had some new NB+ Quincy 254s. These shoes are really good.

skate journal: boulder banks early with fuzz and dave, safeway and southern hill solo later (june 20, 2015 day 166)

Up early on a sunny Saturday. I love it. Met Fuzz and Dave at the newly redone Wells Fargo bank spot. There was a security guard in the parking lot so we just chatted for awhile. It was rad. The dude never left, so we ended up just trying to skate and he never hassled us. Rad. We started with a game of SKATE on the qp to get warmed up. Dave won it. A lot of tricks were done. It was a good warm up. Dave killed it. Then we did our own things. It’s hard to remember everything that went down, but I know Fuzz did front noseblunt over the hip with a slide. Front lips, front tails, ollies. Dave did the switch rock transfer first try, backside ollies, switch blunts, and a thousand more tricks I’m not remembering right now. I did a silly rock to slide around the corner to fakie and front rock, front lipslides and took 1000 tries to do my first blunt to fakie ever. Yes, first one ever. Pretty rad.

After some food and chillin’ at Crisis I went over to Safeway ledge feeling pretty motivated with some new 51mm STFs. I skated hard. I got a bunch of back 50s, one back 50 front 180 out. Really wanted to do kick back 50 shove out and got oh so close. I’ve only done that on a tiny metal edged curb. I also hucked a lot of flip tricks. Seems like lately I’ve been trying tricks I can’t do more then ones I can. Got super close to nollie f/s flip, kind of close to switch heel, almost fakie tre, a couple tres. Tried to slide tailslides, but didn’t. Crook’d the fence ledge a bunch. Never got a decent front crooks to wall push off.

Then I went to Southern Hills. I need to stop going there. The concrete is getting so bad, there are rocks everywhere and the benches only grind if you are good. I struggled. And I started to resent putting the smaller trucks on my board. They just aren’t as stable and I don’t feel as confident on them. Sure they do flip a bit easier, but not much. Since I was struggling so much I started hucking. Did a switch crooks on the curb, came somewhat close to switch tre since I really focused on pretending it was a nollie tre. Tried some lines with kickflip or halfcab flip into the handicap bank. On the ledge I got noseslide, boardslide, front board pop out, the worst front noseslide ever, one slow front 50, argh.
