skate journal: Fremont heads, Chief, TF, well, everyone Denver (June 13)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 18th, 2009 by corpo

After a late night the Fremont kids woke up early and were singing and playing the piano before I could even think of waking up.  We got on the road quick and were to Commerce City by 10 am.  10 am.  I think we were there by 9:30 or something.  It was crazy, but rad.I wanted to skate the ledges, but could not get a groove going at all.  Sam from 303 was there.  That was cool.  Things started looking up when Matt, Eric and I started skating the bowl.  Definitely the best I’ve ever carved it and finally got over the halfway mark in the cradle.  There was some dude turning 50 the next day RIPPING the bowl.  It was rad.  Next up was a game of SKATE with Matt, Dan, Joe and me.  I somehow pulled out the win and was happy to get tricks like 360 flip, fakie bigflip, fakie varial flip and even a heelflip which has been killing me lately.  Shortly after that Jeff showed up and I sat next to Matt and watched the demo.  Jeff KILLED it.After a lot of food we met up with TF Jason, Neil, Fuzz and Brian and Cass.  Our crew was huge!  We skated a banked manny pad.  I tried to do a cali grind to nose manual while Brian dove over the whole manny pad and somehow survived.  Seriously Brian, how do you slam like that and get up?  There is too much going on to even pretend to list everything that went down so here’s a couple highlights I can remember.  Fuzz 180 noseman.  Jeff Nollie f/s flip the hip.  Brian dive to hip.  Dan funny manual 180.  Joe back ollies.  Neil everything.  Jason bailing a flatground ollie.  Me unable to do anything.Next up we went to a gnarly bank spot that was nearby.   We all skated it.  Brian, Jason, Jeff, Fuzz and Neil put the tricks down though.Another wallride/bank spot followed and we were joined by Chief who managed to drive all over Denver to find us and not complain for a second.  This session was especially troubling for me as I couldn’t even ollie up the curb.  Ugh.  I chilled for awhile.  Joe knocked out a bunch of flippers, Neil perfected backside wallrides, Brian and Jeff did them frontside, Fuzz skated so fast that just his ollies up the curb were sick, Matt lofted fakie wallrides to new heights, Jason filmed (thank you!), Chief and I dide some bank tricks.  I ended up doing an alley oop no comply first try, then followed it with a bigspin version next try.  Whoa!More skating.  We went to the Speer ledges.  I completely sucked, but managed to beat Brian to a boardslide popout.  People were skating so good.  Joe, Dan, Jason, Matt, Fuzz, Jeff, Chief were going off.  Highlights were Dan gap over to noseslide.  Jeff everything.  Fuzz switch boardslide popout.  I don’t even remember what all else went down.  I started filming Fuzz and Jeff, but it started pouring before they got their runs.  Doh.Fun day.  I skated like crap.  But the crew was so sick and the spots were awesome.

skate journal: Nederland skatepark with Nate and Chief (June 12)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 18th, 2009 by corpo

Slightly tired from the night before we felt like something different and Nate had the idea to hit Nederland.  So we were off on a nice mountain drive to a little place called Aspen, mmm, California.   Dumb and Dumber quote.  Dumb.  Anyways the park is pretty fun.  It would be much funner without annoying high school kids that think they are way better than they are.  Seriously two dudes spent the whole time we were there trying treflips up a stepup that they couldn’t even ollie cleanly.  But we got our skate on and it was fun.  Nate dropped into the shallow of the pool which was gnar.  Although Lazer could probably roll into it first try.  We all cruised around getting the feel for what we wanted to try for quite some time.  I settled on trying a run for awhile and got a couple.  Front 50 the ledge, back rock the backside of the cradle, noseslide the ledge.  Front 50 the ledge, front rock the cradle, crooks the ledge.  Pretty hyped on that one.  Chief was hitting his patented bigspin fakie on the pyramid, Nate was pole jaming combos, kids were trying treflip flyouts, it was pretty fun.  At the end I was trying back rocks on the low bar of the handrail next to a q-pipe.  Some kid came and showed me how to do it and made sure to beam me for good measure.  It was pretty funny.  Decent session.  Those kids pretty much suck though.Late night the Fremont dudes showed up.  Matt, Dan, Eric and Joe.  Brian and Lazer were here and we skated Rampy.  Lazer and Brian killed it.  Lazer even took a request – the invert.  So rad.  Everyone skated for about an hour and the sweat was flowing.  After that we watched the rough cuts of Off The Couch and stayed up late.

skate journal: quick rock creek session before Rad (June 11)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 18th, 2009 by corpo

Nate, Chief and I hit red curbs prior to the Rad video premiere.  It was pretty fun.  I took forever to land a front 50 and my bag is 1/4 as big as it is on Rampy.  It was fun though.  Cheif and I were both working on tricks.  He was doing back tail and I was trying front 50.  We made a bet that the last to get their trick would by the first round of beers and we ended up getting the tricks back to back.  Sick!  That didn’t stop us from drinking a few beers later on though.  Ha.

skate journal: horrible red curbs session (june 10)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 18th, 2009 by corpo

Way behind on my skate journal .. Hadn’t skated in awhile and it was raining.  Really didn’t want to do Rampy so went to red curbs.  I sucked.  I really sucked.  I don’t remember any good that came out of it and I focused my board.  Lame!

Super good.  In high school I remember skating at Chad Benson’s house a few times.  He ripped back then too.

NULL!

This error message came up earlier today at my corpo job:SQL0407N  Assignment of a NULL value to a NOT NULL column “TBSPACEID=2, TABLEID=8, COLNO=2” is not allowed.  SQLSTATE=23502Pretty rad huh?  That’s pretty much the reason why Null is called Null right there.

I want to skate in Japan because the benches are so low

and the spots look super fun.

skate journal: downtown boulder with Chief, Jake and Nate (June 6)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 8th, 2009 by corpo

Insanely tired and sore from a long day of skating on Saturday followed by late night beer drinking Chief and I set off for some downtown Boulder action.  We met up with Nate and Jake at St Julien and got things rolling.  I didn’t expect much of myself, but when Chief is in town you can’t be lazy.St Julien was a fun warmup.  Chief nailed some no complys over the curb thing and we cruised it for awhile.  I put together a little run with a front 50, ollie a small box, then no comply 270 back tail the ledge.Next up we hit the rock parking garage area with the rock ride, manual pad, and other stuff.  We were there for awhile and it was fun.  I got a run with a kickflip up the curb, manual then varial flip into the bank.  The kickflip up the curb was fun because it was into the curb cut so it felt kinda neat.  We all did some more tricks into the bank.  Chief got a fast as lighting pop shove, kickflip and no comply.  Maybe more.  Nate did a switch flip to raise the tech gnar factor.  Jake may have just recently learned kickflips, but he put that down.  I got a frontside halfcab flip after about 50 tries and a first try fakie bigflip. From there Jake bailed out and the three of us hit the little Wells Fargo banks for my favorite part of the evening.  I started off sucking but got lucky on a back 5-0 fakie and a horrible and lucky first try back hurricane.  After that I just started trying new stuff and somehow landed them.  I got a first try back nosegrind.  Probably the best back nosegrind I’ve ever done.  I got a bluntside to pivot kind of too and a front 180 nosegrind 180.  Although I didn’t grind it.  Before leaving I got my first ever back tail on tranny.  HYPED!  Nate and Chief were up in the session too.  Nate perfected the back 5-0 to fakie and Chief drilled out a bunch of alley oop fakie 50s.  So sick.  Pretty fun night for how tired I was.

skate journal: how a saturday should be (June 6)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 8th, 2009 by corpo

Man, I don’t even know where to start on this one, so many awesome things aligned for this Saturday.  First, it was sunny.  It’s seriously been a minute since we’ve had a sunny Saturday.  Next the lineup for the crew was pretty out of this world.  Chris Jones was in town with Kit to do some photo essay on how skateboarding keeps you young and wanted to take photos of me all day.  Next up my homie Chief was coming to town who I haven’t seen in a couple years.  Hyped!  And in other rare appearances GABE (who’s name will be all caps throughout this update since he states that he reads these updates daily) was gonna be in town for one day too.  Sick!Things got startes with a Rampy sesh with Chris, Kit, Chief and I.  A good warmup that got the sweat flowing.  After playing in the street we headed to a new pool near Boulder we had heard about.  The crew at this point was John, Neil, Rob, Chris, Kit, Chief, Jason and me.  Rolling deep, and it would get deeper. So I’ve never skated a realy legit backyard pool before.  We had to bail it out and everything.  Super fun.  The whole thing was fun.  We skated it for a couple hours.  The shallow is wide with two main corners that are really tight and a deepend with even tighter corners.  While the deep end dried up we mostly just carved the shallow corners.  Super fun.  Neils of Fire straight killed it with lots of carves over akward lights and stuff.  Chief was having a blast.  Jason killed the shallow carves.  Chris was shredding the whole time too and he ended up getting a few bangers.  Boneless in the deep end, front rock in the deep and ollied into the waterfall.  So sick.We left to go to a game of SKATE at the boulder park, but were too late.  Next up was the Neil ledges with an even larger crew.  We added Fuzz, Lazer, Bernie, GABE, Jake, Nate and Squeeks to the crew.  Maybe even more.  I didn’t really skate well and no one was super into the ledges.  We played a couple large game of SKATE in which I was quickly eliminated.  I got a 3 flip first try though so I can’t really complain much.  Chief and Bernie had to take off and then we all went to Rock Creek.  Some serious shredding went down there by people other than me.  It’s pathetic bad I am at skating anything other than rampy.  It was fun though and I can’t even begin to document all the ripping that Chris, Fuzz, GABE, Lazer, Jason, Squeeks and John laid down.  I ended my Rock Creek time by trying boardslide to feeble attempts with Nate on the flat bar.  I came close to a couple and Nate landed it.Exhausted beyond belief we had to skate Rampy for a minute because GABE has wanted to skate it forever.  It was Just GABE, Kit, John, Chris and I.  GABE went off and did so many of his rad tricks.  All his cool rock fakie willy things.  What are they called?  So many tricks.  My favorite was the blunt to staple gun.  Day over.  Finally.  Beer drinking at Lazer’s went down.  Fun fun fun day.

skate journal: ugh (June 5)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 8th, 2009 by corpo

Was gonna hopefully go meet up with Bernie and crew at the Longmont park later on, but it looked like rain.  Stopped at Valmont for a minute and it was wet.  Skated across the street and it was dry.  Skated around for a bit trying to do a bunch of ollies and sucked as much as humanly possible.  I’m not sure why I can’t even ollie these days but it was horrible horrible horrible.  A nearby flash of lighting scared me enough to bolt to red curbs and continue sucking.  But the good thing was I now had a fresh sheet of grip tape so I knew that at any minute I could just focus my board and be done.  I didn’t last long.
